A former Portland Pirates ice arena is set to be re-purposed as a new youth sports facility and event space. The Maine Sports Arena will be housed at the OA Sports Center, 15 Lund Road in Saco.

The 26,000-square foot facility will boast five volleyball courts and three basketball courts, and will be able to accommodate various other sporting and recreational activities. The space was acquired by Maine Juniors, a Junior Olympic youth volleyball club, established in 2001.

According to arena director Kris Dorer, the non-profit organization started at the kitchen table of the club's founder John Razsa and has grown from 20 to 315 players in the last 16 years. The program currently serves girls ages 8 to 18 and has plans to launch programs for younger kids and boys.

The facility will serve youth and other sports in Southern Maine as well as accommodate small and large corporate rentals, trade shows and concerts.

The project is currently under construction, with sports floors being installed and all facilities being brought up to speed to open for practice in the next few weeks. The facility also includes locker rooms, offices, a lounge or party room and stadium seating.
