World-class stadium to come up in N Bengaluru

18 February 2016

Bengaluru is all set to have a stadium of international standard at Bellahalli in the northern parts of the city in and around Kempapura in Bytarayanapura assembly constituency.

The stadium will be constructed on a 15-acre land, part of which had been recovered from encroachers off Thanisandra Road at Bellahalli. "In a recent visit Agriculture minister Krishna Byre Gowda, also the MLA of Byatarayanapura constituency, inspected the spots where the land was recovered from encroachers. The land is worth hundreds of crore and is located between Thanisandra road and Bellahalli. The recovered land in Thanisandra (3.5 acres) and Dasarahalli (2.5 acres) was asked to be kept for a playground and 15 acres of land has been asked to be reserved for an international sports stadium," a Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) official told Bangalore Mirror. "Also, some land has been reserved for constructing houses for the poor; besides that, there will also be a composting plant constructed using the latest technology."

In all the recovered lands, Byre Gowda's first priority is to setup playgrounds and then parks. The state government is in the possession of the land at present.

Byre Gowda, also the state agriculture minister, said the 15-acre land in Bellahalli is 500 metres from the peripheral ring road, within the BBMP limits, and has good road connectivity.

"In the future, it can be developed as sports destination in North Bengaluru. It is connected to Nagawara ring road and has a four-lane road connecting to the airport too. I have already spoken to the revenue authorities and reserved this land for this purpose which will be done in a week's time," he told Bangalore Mirror, adding that the stadium will be developed to host international sports events.

"In the first stage, we are planning to use the 15 acres Bellahalli's prime land for a sports facility. The biggest problem in Bengaluru is the availability of land, even if you have resources to invest in the city limits," Byre Gowda said.

This scarcity had posed a problem to set up a topline sports facility in the city.

"The city's existing sports stadia are in the Central Business District area, where the traffic density is more. We are setting aside a 15-acre land just to start an international sports stadium," he said. "We have got the land now. The funds will be brought in from the Central and state governments. I have already discussed with our sports minister. We will dedicate the land only for the purpose of sports."

However, Byre Gowda said the blueprint for the stadium is yet to be made. "It will be discussed soon after taking suggestions from the concerned department."
