Texas to build hall of honor in Darrell K Royal-Memorial Stadium

Thursday, May 17, 2018

The Texas athletic department is planning another major addition to Darrell K Royal-Memorial Stadium after the 2018 season.

Athletic director Chris Del Conte told the Austin American-Statesman’s Brian Davis that he has hired an architectural firm to build a 30,000-square foot hall of honor inside the north end zone of the stadium. The project will cost approximately $10 million, Del Conte said, and construction could begin as soon as January 2019.

“An athletic event is where you come to celebrate our institution,” Del Conte said. “Where do you bring fans to gather and talk about our history? You bring old lettermen back to say, ‘God, I played for Darrell Royal and here’s my coach.’ Then you have old tape about it. You have new video and a place that says, ‘This is Texas.’ That’s one thing we’re missing.”

The hall will be a space to showcase the Longhorns’ history, tradition and achievements. It is a similar concept to what Oklahoma State and Kansas have in their basketball arenas or what Oklahoma has with the new Barry Switzer Center.

Del Conte has outlined numerous upgrades he wants to make to what he says are out-of-date facilities at Texas. He’s planning a major renovation to the south end zone of the football stadium, and he’s unveiled plans for a new basketball arena as well.
