Stadium renovations for Chan 2018 to cost KSh4b

14 June 2017

The budget for preparing all the five stadia that will be used to host the 2018 Africa Home Nations Championships (Chan) has been estimated at KSh4 billion.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa made the announcement on Tuesday as CAF officials completed an inspection tour of the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

“This a big tournament and in Kenya we have a major problem when it comes to playing surface. We’re going to remove all the grass surfaces on those pitches and redo them. We’ll do it right from scratch so that exercise will take around 21 weeks.

“We have been assured Chan will be hosted in Kenya so right now the ball’s on our court; we have to show we are capable of hoisting it. We were at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium yesterday and the report is more need to be done,” Mwendwa told Citizen Digital.

The FKF boss urged the government to step up its efforts in putting in place structures as recommended and warned being stripped of the hosting rights remains a possibility should the verdict by CAF inspectors be negative.

“For changing rooms here in Kenyatta as well as Stands G ad O need massive renovation. There is also plenty work that needs to be done on the VIP pavilion and the parking lot,” Mwendwa stated.

The contingent heads to the Kinoru Stadium in Meru County before rounding off the tour at the Kenyan capital Nairobi where Nyayo Nation Stadium and Moi Sports International Center Kasarani will be focus.
