Phoenix suburb getting serious about plans for large sports complex

Officials in Mesa are stepping up their game to build a large sports complex in the East Valley city.

The East Valley Tribune reported that the city’s tourism branch, Visit Mesa, recently discussed the project with the city council and came away in a positive mood.

The complex would be located near Loop 202 near Brown Road, close to Red Mountain High School.

A Scottsdale firm’s feasibility study suggested 24 soccer fields and an indoor fieldhouse for the facility and noted it could be a moneymaker.

Marc Garcia, president of Visit Mesa, told the newspaper that the site could earn up to $50 million for the city. He said most of the fields would be grass but at least a half-dozen would have artificial turf.

The field could be used for lacrosse and rugby, Garcia said. The city would own and operate the complex.
