Florida A&M University athletics announced Tuesday a makeover is coming to Bragg Memorial Stadium.

FAMU is ripping up its natural grass and replacing it with AstroTurf.

The Rattlers have played on real grass since Bragg opened in 1957, but the school says it was time for a change.

More than just aesthetically, the school believes the turf will be safer and offer a faster playing surface for Willie Simmons' football squad.

In addition to football, FAMU athletic director John Eason says the new field will bring in new teams.

"I think a lot of times, we just think of football, but it'll benefit our marching, the DRS school," Eason said. "It'll allow us an opportunity to bring in soccer for youth in the city and just a host of others as well."

The cost of the project is $800,000 and will cover the cost of the AstroTurf installation, new goal posts, new field goal nets and money to update the concourse.

The project is expected to be completed in August.
