New Turf Coming In Weslaco

23 June 2017

The playing field at Bobby Lackey Stadium is undergoing an upgrade this summer. After 10 years, the stadium is getting a new turf and track surface.

"If you looked at the 50 yard line, you could see where we were losing fiber and losing of the fiber is very critical because as these fields are produced, they're produced as normal as possible traction,” said Weslaco ISD athletic director Oscar Riojas.

In terms of logos, Riojas says Weslaco and Weslaco East High School will be represented equally on the new turf.

"We feel we purchased the very best quality of turf that will be placed on this field. It's through a company called FieldTurf,” said Riojas.  “It's very high quality. I believe it's the very best we can offer to our kiddos.”

The sound system will also be upgraded to enhance the game-day experience at Bobby Lackey Stadium. Riojas tells CHANNEL 5 SPORTS, the project should be complete in time for the start of football practice August 7th.
