MC Sports to close in Plover

31 January 2017

MC Sports has confirmed it is closing its location in Crossroads Commons. An email from the company stated the closure of the location, 1200 Commons Circle, began with a going out of business sale this past Friday. The location opened in 2006 as part of a nearly 47,000-square-foot retail center that also houses Petco and Michael's.

Village of Plover Administrator Dan Mahoney said in an email that the closing was "unfortunate," and that the village would provide any assistance needed to help fill the space.

"The owners and employees have been great to work with and MC Sports was very community minded, as evidenced by the discounts they provided to locals sports teams and organizations," Mahoney said in the email. "We wish the owners the best with respect to their other locations."

A sporting goods company with stores throughout the Midwest, MC Sports was founded in 1946 as Michigan Clothiers but in 1962 changed its name and focused entirely on quality sports equipment, footwear, and apparel. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the company operates stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri.

In June, the company opened a location in Wisconsin Rapids at 2211 8th St. S., an around 24,000-square-foot retail space owned by Briar Meads Capital of New York. The space had previously been occupied by Staples, which opened in June 1999 and closed in May 2014 following an announcement by the company it would close up to 225 stores by 2015.
