Massive revamp of Frankston Basketball Stadium, including four new courts, to start February

19 January 2017

A MULTI-MILLION dollar revamp of the Frankston Basketball Stadium will begin next month. The move comes after council voted late last year to award the contract for works to Devco Project and Construction Management Pty Ltd.Frankston and District Basketball Association secretary Rob Little described the announcement as a milestone.

“We look forward to continue working in partnership with council in securing further funds for additional works currently outside the scope of stage one — including a mezzanine level and the establishment of a regional high performance centre,” he said.

“In 2017 Frankston will be hosting the University of Texas men’s basketball team.“But we are limited with the resources we are able to offer these international level athletes.”

Mayor Brian Cunial said expansion of the stadium would support continued growth of basketball locally.“The upgraded stadium will increase the capacity to host elite games and competitions, helping bring more visitors to Frankston,” he said.

Stage one of the project is funded by the Federal Government ($5.2 million), Victorian Government ($2.5m), council ($4m) and the association ($1m).

Stage one includes four new courts including a new ‘show court’ with about 600 seats, new entry and reception, cafe with commercial kitchen and new change rooms.

Dunkley federal Liberal MP Chris Crewther said sport helped provide confidence for youth, education, health and community involvement.“It has a strong preventive effect in regards to disconnection and youth crime,” he said.

Carrum state Labor MP Sonya Kilkenny said: “Great things can happen for our community when all three levels of government work together.”

The stadium has long operated at capacity with games not starting until late at night to meet demand from teams wanting to compete.
