The Auburn City Council has given the Doubledays the green light to install a new turf field.

The project, which is scheduled to start at the end of the current season in September, will be funded by a $3 million grant.

The new turf infield and outfield will require less maintenance, no weeding and is more cost-effective, especially given Central New York's unpredictable weather.

For a player perspective, Adam Winslow, the Auburn Doubledays and Falcon Park General Manager, the differences between turf and grass aren't major. The turf will mean a faster pace when running and sliding.

The grant will also include improvements that will make the Falcon Park clubhouses year-round buildings and the turf will make the park more accessible to other sports like lacrosse and soccer, bringing in added revenue.

"I think it's a win-win for the Doubledays, for the City of Auburn and the surrounding communities and Cayuga Community College as well as they start up their athletic programs and boost their enrollment as well," said Winslow.

Cayuga Community College is working on a deal to use Falcon Park during their season.

The plan is to have the entire project completed before the beginning of the next college baseball season in March.
