Cruz Azul, America to play on new turf at Azteca Stadium

19 July 2018

The field at Azteca Stadium has been resurfaced in time for the new season to begin for its two tenants, Cruz Azul and America.

Earlier this summer, the old grass was removed and replaced by a newer, more resilient turf. Cruz Azul will play for the first time on the new surface when they open their Mexican Liga Bancomer season Saturday against Puebla.

Led by manager Pedro Caixinha, the club initiated and paid for the field renovation. Their practice fields were also resurfaced to better familiarize the players with the new turf, which is 96 percent natural grass and 4 percent artificial grass.

The goal was to make the stadium field more resistant to wear and tear in order to withstand the high number of games played there. Cruz Azul and America will host 21 games at Azteca Stadium over the next four months.

Camp Nou, Barcelona's home stadium, has the same playing surface, as do the venues for Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Villarreal, PSV Eindhoven, and the majority of the stadiums in the Premier League.
