$3 million renovation to Alabama softball stadium proposed

Pending trustee approval, improvements could be coming to Alabama’s softball complex.

The first step in a $3 million renovation to Rhoads Stadium will come Friday morning at the Board of Trustees meeting in Birmingham. The athletics department will seek approval of the scope and budget as Step 1 in the process.

If approved, the project funded by the Crimson Tide Foundation would renovate the stadium’s press box, clubhouse while adding concessions, restrooms and two suites.

According to the documents filed in support of the project obtained by, the stadium improvements are needed to “keep pace with peer institutions and to host the 2020 NCAA regional tournament.”

The clubhouse, last updated in 2010, would add two additional lockers to accommodate the roster while adding to the restrooms and showers.

A new 341-square foot umpire locker room is also planned. Currently, the officials have to be driven in and out of the stadium before and after the game. The goal of the new space I is “decreasing the amount of fan interaction,” according to the documents.

The proposed new concessions and restrooms would be located on the first-base line and occupy 1,599 square feet. The two suites would be 216 square feet apiece. Currently, one main concession stand behind home plate serves the stadium seating 3,940.
