Sylacauga City Leaders To Vote On Sports Complex Proposal

21 April 2016

The city of Sylacauga could be increasing its sales tax. City leaders are expected to vote on a proposal to build a new sports complex.

The new proposal would add on to the facility at Twin Street, creating a sports complex and a new city swimming pool.

The estimated price tag is $20 million.

An additional $5 million will be used for work on the road that runs to the building.

The city would pay for it all by raising the sales tax one and a half percent.

The chamber of commerce said many business owners want the updates to the facility, but want the city to keep its competitive tax advantage.

“And we want to be sure that whatever action the city takes, that it doesn’t, in a rush to build something, it doesn’t offer long term damage to our credibility or our borrowing ability and we hope we can get a sports complex developed,” Mike Landers, Chamber of Commerce Director, said.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for May 4. They are expected to vote on the tax increase proposal then.
