Chesterfield’s loss is Belleville’s gain, as the developer of multi-sport complex opted to build on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River and not in west St. Louis County, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Global Sports International’s 11-field complex will be part of a $50 million hotel and restaurant development near the National Shrine of Our Lady of Snows. The athletic fields will host soccer tournaments, but can also be used for lacrosse and other sports.

The groundbreaking for the Belleville Multisport Complex will be on Tuesday at 1 pm, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert and the developer believe the athletic complex will bring in revenue from families traveling to town for youth soccer events and help foster the local economy.
