Former West Roxbury landfill reopens as $18.2M sports complex

After $18.2 million in improvements, a former landfill has reopened as the West Roxbury Education Complex Raiders Field.

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh was on hand Saturday to rechristen the 14-acre park, which now includes four sports fields (football, baseball, softball and multi-sports) behind the West Roxbury Education Complex at 1205 Veterans of Foreign Wars Parkway. The public high school sports complex also includes a six-land paved running track with spectator stands, three tennis courts and two half-basketball courts.

Walsh on Saturday said the opening of Raiders Field also marked the start of public transportation service to the field, the public school and to Millennium Park through the integration of the route 36 bus.

"It is a great day when we can provide a top of the line athletic facility, not only to our public schools, but also to the West Roxbury community and the larger Boston community," Walsh said.

Boston's Department of Public Works completed the $18.2 million project in two phases. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection helped provide financing for the site rehabilitation.

"What was once a landfill that threatened to negatively impact the natural resources within the nearby Charles River is now a modern athletic complex that protects the environment and provides many recreational opportunities for students and the public at-large," said Martin Suuberg, MassDEP commissioner, at the event.
