Eastbay Sports Complex in Wausau officially opens after 30 years

1 May 2015

After nearly 30 years of work, the Marathon County Sports Complex was officially opened today.

Holtz-Krause Steering Committee chairman Dave Eisenreich says seeing kids on the field and Thursday night's match between East and West is really special. "And to see all of the people out there and to see the field start to be used, it's really exciting, and it's something that all of us, I think can really be proud of."

Eastbay of Wausau has stepped up to purchase both the primary naming rights and the name on the main field for the next five years. Officials are hoping to be able to fund some of the operating costs of the complex on the rights.

Wausau East girls soccer coach David Wells says having the complex here is going to be a great boon to attracting families to the area. "This community is just really, I think, doing a great job on focusing on the things that will attract those population bases we're interested in having." Thursday night's matchups between East and West will be repeated later this spring. "First of the two Rock Games, it's a total goal series we play between the two, and I think it's just a fitting inaugural event for this facility."

This weekend MC United is holding this first tournament on the pitch, the Mountain Bay Cup. That will be bringing around 1300 players into the town for the weekend.

Officials are hoping to expand the offerings over the next few years, and hope to add lacrosse, field hockey and even rugby to the sports played at the complex.
