Construction Of 3 New Stadiums To Start In July

27 April 2016

Construction of three football stadiums in Nyamata, Kibungo and Ngoma will kick off in July this year.

According to a statement signed by the Minister for Sports and Culture, Julienne Uwacu, works on the structures will begin after the passing of the budget for 2016-17 financial year.

“Studies were carried out to know what is required and where they will be built. We were unable to start work last year because of the preparations for CHAN 2016,” the minister said.

The minister stressed that the sports infrastructures will not only be used to host sports activities, but also act as amenities that bring communities for entertainment and other events.

It is also expected that when once finalised, the stadiums will boost sports promotion and development of youth talent at the grassroots level as part of the government’s broader strategy to promote sports.

The three stadiums, which will have capacity of 3000 people, will be constructed in phases, beginning with leveling the surfaces, and erecting the perimeter walls for each ground.

Amahoro National Stadium is the largest arena in the country with capacity of 25,000, followed by Huye Stadium (10,000), Kigali Regional Stadium (7,000) and Umuganda Stadium (5,200).
