Work Begins To Replace Turf At JSU's Burgess-Snow Field

28 July 2016

The playing surface at Burgess-Snow Field is getting a makeover as work has begun to replace the turf field.

Workers removed the old turf Wednesday morning, according to Jacksonville State University athletic director Greg Seitz.

Seitz said turf fields like the one at JSU have a lifespan of 8-10 years. The old surface, which was installed in 2005, was 12 years old.

“We just felt like it’s time to replace the turf,” Seitz said. “It’s exceeded its life expectancy.”

Seitz also said players and fans will not notice much of a difference with the new field. The surface will still be green with the same logo in the middle, but the color schemes will be different in the end zones, according to Seitz.

Since the base and drainage from 2005 are still in good condition, Seitz said this project won’t be as time-consuming or expensive as the original installation. The project will cost about $300,000 and will take about 2-3 weeks, according to Seitz, who added that the project will be done by Aug. 20 at the latest — a couple weeks before the Sept. 1 home opener against North Alabama. ProGrass, which is based out of Sharpsburg, Pa., won the bid to replace the field. They also did the original work.

“All they’re doing is laying new carpet,” Seitz said. “I was just over there, and the sub-base looks fantastic.”

Seitz knew this project was coming up, so the funding came from regular operating expenses. He also said the project was planned for after the spring game, high school jamborees and summer camps. He said it won’t affect fall practices because they mostly use the grass practice field in the heat.

“The stadium will be ready for any scrimmages they want to do later this month,” Seitz said.
