Somerset sports stadium getting a new turf field

Somerset Area School District's stadium is receiving a more than $300,000 field face-lift.

FieldTurf, an artificial turf installer headquartered in Montreal, Canada, began installing a new artificial turf field Monday.

Somerset athletic director Scott Close said that the timeframe for completion is three weeks, depending on the weather.

Close said the average lifespan for a turf field is 10 years. He added that Somerset's field was 11 years old.

"So it's time to replace it," he said. "It will look a little different and be a little more durable."

The new field should look similar to the previous design, he said. The field will feature the Golden Eagle mascot in the center and the outside will be framed with orange and white.

"We wanted something that is aesthetically pleasing but also economical," he said.

According to school board meeting minutes, the board approved the turf replacement in September for $383,371.16.

Superintendent Krista Mathias said that students seem excited for a "refresh" of the field.

She echoed Close that the turf was past its recommended age.

"There are a lot of athletic events on the surface, but also community events that enjoy using the facility," she said, adding that the turf holds up better than grass for sporting events. "We are able to have activities because the turf can withstand the weather better."

She added that because of the quality of the field and its proximity to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the stadium has become a more attractive venue for state games.
