New Perth Stadium will light up with 850 LEDs

1 February 2017

PERTH'S new stadium won't have the most seats in the country, but it will have the most lights.A state-of-the-art LED lighting system promises to rival world-class European sporting arenas.Unlike Domain Stadium and the WACA, the lights are part of the 60,000 seat structure and are built into the roof.

Premier Colin Barnett said the lighting system had not been seen before in Australia."They're energy efficient. So bright lights, so great for television coverage and great for the whole effect," he said.

The 850 LEDs will circle Perth stadium and be able to change colours and form patterns. The canvas roof of the stadium could act as a screen with team colours being projected on it.

Mr Barnett remained hopeful the stadium would be completed in time to host next summer's Ashes Test but the official line is still that it will be ready by the 2018 AFL season. The lights will be tested later this year.
