Missouri officials took an important step Thursday for the construction of a south end-zone facility at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field.

As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Dave Matter, the University of Missouri Board of Curators approved the hiring of an architect for the project by a 5-1 vote. By passing the measure, the board authorized design costs of $4.31 million already raised by Mizzou’s athletic department through private donations.

The project has an initial budget of $96.7 million. The athletic department collected about half that total through fundraising, per Matter.

The university is expected to seek the board’s approval for the entire project in June. The facility is targeted to be done by the start of the 2019 football season.

Memorial Stadium opened in 1926 and has seen numerous upgrades in recent years. The south end zone area had been open for years before grandstands and video scoreboards were added. The north end zone is best known for its grass expanse containing a large block-letter M.The south-end renovation will include a training facility for the Tigers football team.

The lone dissenting vote was by Curator Pamela Henrickson. There was no immediate information on why Hendrickson opposed the expenditure.
