Mecklenburg Co. Commissioners approve $32M Memorial Stadium renovation

20 December 2017

After a conversation that’s taken place for the better part of the decade, the Board of County Commissioners approved a motion to exercise the county manager’s recommendation to pour in more than $32 million into American Legion Stadium.

The historic stadium is home to the Charlotte Independence, a minor league soccer team.

It took nearly two hours for a motion to be reached with each commissioner bringing a long list of questions and concerns.

Vilma Leake pushed for the stadium to be senior citizen friendly. Trevor Fuller expected more, calling the proposal “very basic.”

The renovation will bring additional seating,  bathrooms, a concession area, bridge and tribute to veterans.

“We have so many veterans in our state and in our county and they will be thrilled with this,” said at-large Commissioner Pat Cotham.

The renovation is expected to take two years to compete.
