Maroon Tide Rolls on New AstroTurf

10 November 2017

The Galax High School football field was the star of the summer, and its luster has only grown brighter through the fall. AstroTurf® installed a highly anticipated, technologically advanced athletic turf field in July, and the Maroon Tide football team have shined on the new playing surface.

The old sod field at Galax High’s football stadium was removed and replaced with AstroTurf’s RootZone 3D3 Blend sports turf. This premium synthetic turf system is the same product found across the country at several high profile Division I college football programs. The turf combines specialized fibers, infill, and AstroTurf’s patented RootZone sub-layer to create a football turf with high marks for durability, playability, and safety.

“Our program has reached new heights because of our new turf field but more importantly, our whole school system has benefited beyond what we anticipated,” said Head Football Coach, Mark Dixon. “We are able to practice outside every day and no longer have to utilize the gym space which has meant more practice time for all of our sports program. I truly believe after seeing the impact of the turf field on our school system that it is a matter of time for the majority of schools will move in the direction of turf fields.”

The field was installed in time for Galax High to get in a few weeks of practice on the new artificial turf before the season kicked off. Since then, the Maroon Tide have gone undefeated at home this season on their new AstroTurf field. It’s another promising start to the season for a squad that won the state championship in 2015 under Coach Dixon, a UVA grad and former NFL lineman with the Miami Dolphins.
