The clock is quickly ticking towards June 1st  when Meru County hosts the 55th Madaraka day celebrations at Kinoru Stadium, an event that also marks the official opening of the stadium which has been under construction.

The stadium has been a beehive of activity as the contractor tries to beat the deadline. The pitch now has grass while civil works were at 90% completion according to the site engineer.

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi accompanied by Interior PS Eng. Dr. Karanja Kibicho, Sports PS Ambassador Kirimi Kaberia, Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu and the Meru County Commissioner Mr Wilfred Nyagwanga inspected the stadium on Monday 7th  and expressed confidence that it will be ready by June 1st.

The national government has sunk over Ksh 1 Billion in the construction of the stadium. When complete the Kinoru will boasts of VVIP and a VIP Pavilion, VIP and standard changing rooms, Northern and Southern terraces, an ultra-modern tarmacked running track, World Cup 2018 Bermuda standard pitch grass, a borehole, one elevated and two underground water tanks, cabro paved roads surrounding the stadium, a parking lot and drainage system.

“This will be one of the most beautiful stadium in Kenya. I am here to accompany the PS Mr. Kibicho who has come to check the preparedness of this stadium for hosting Madaraka,” Said Governor Murungi.

 “I can assure you as Governor of Meru we are very excited to  host this event.When the stadium is finally complete we will be happy when the President comes here on 1st June, we expect him to officially open  Kinoru Stadium. Thereafter there will be a flurry of activities here a lot of exciting matches both national and international, ” added Governor Kiraitu

“Today marked one of the numerous inspection tours aimed at gauging the preparedness of the Kinoru Stadium Grounds to host the national event, with findings on the progress highly optimistic.,” Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu noted.

Earlier,  Site engineer Muya told KTN: “We are right on track, 90% work is done, the boundary wall and VIP pavilion is almost done. The weather is favorable unlike the past and we positive  we will host this event. The deadline is favorable to us”

“We expect to accommodate 12,000 people, that is our capacity,” added Muya.

The stadium was earmarked to host the 2018 CHAN competition in January but slow works made CAF shift the competition to Morocco.

Premier League side Tusker had nominated the stadium to host its home matches before construction began and the record crowd witnessed during matches was a clear testimony of the football hunger in the grassroots.

This weekend, Kasarani Stadium will also be ready to host Gor Mahia versus Hull City friendly match.Nyayo Stadium is also shaping up well with final touches on the VIP section in progress.
