Grasshoppers stadium gets new name

7 March 2017

Grasshoppers fans, you might notice a little change when you enter the ballpark for opening day next month. But, then again, you might not, because that change has nothing to do with baseball and everything to do with banking.

The Grasshoppers’ home turf is no longer NewBridge Bank Park. The Greensboro Grasshoppers and First National Bank unveiled its new name and logo on Monday: First National Bank Field.

As of Monday afternoon, signs at the ballpark still read NewBridge Bank Park. But Katie Dannemiller, vice president of baseball operations for the Grasshoppers, said in an email that the signs will be changed out over the next few weeks. Here’s a reminder on how that name change came to be.

Yadkin Bank of Raleigh bought NewBridge Bank — which held naming rights to the Grasshoppers’ ballpark — in March 2016. But last summer, F.N.B. Corp. of Pittsburgh announced it planned to buy Yadkin. First National Bank is the company’s largest subsidiary.

Thus, the new name.

First National Bank agreed to continue the sponsorship of the ballpark that NewBridge Bank previously held. And fans, if you consider this a perk, then here you go: First National Bank will have two of its ATMs at the park.
