Council authorizes Duterte to sign MOU with UP Mindanao for sports complex project

30 April 2015

The City Council passed on third reading Tuesday an ordinance authorizing Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to sign on behalf of the city a memorandum of understanding with officials of the University of the Philippines Mindanao for the establishment of a sports complex at its Mintal campus.

UP administrators have reportedly coordinated with designers from its team of architects for the design of the facility.

Claimants in UP have agreed to be relocated, granted the relocation site is still within the university’s 204-hectare property.

The agreement adheres to a 1998 MOA between both parties.

The General Appropriations Act of 2015 allocated P200 million for the first phase of the 20-hectare project – the construction of a track oval, multipurpose gyms, as well as facilities like lights for the initial phase of the project.

Another P50 million was allocated for the construction of an access road from Manambulan.

The Deparrtment of Public Works and Highways has been contracted to do the project, with the agency waiting for UP’s design for bidding to begin.

According to UP Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion, total development of the area is estimated to take around 20 years.
