The City of Langford is hoping to begin putting more seating around the Westhills Stadium soon.

The stadium currently holds 1,718 and the City wants to increase the capacity to 8,000.

Mayor Stew Young said there is no timeline slated yet because the City is waiting for help from the provincial government and B.C. Hydro to move the hydro pole that is situated on the opposite side of the stadium.

The push for this project is garnering a lot of support from businesses and residents, Young said.

In the past, temporary seating for sporting events has been added at the stadium, that accommodated up to 3,000 people, but with the potential for Langford to get involved with the professional soccer Canadian Premiere League, the stadium should be able to seat 8,000, he noted.

Young said the expansion of the stadium will happen, it’s just a matter of time.

The initial cost quoted by B.C. Hydro to have the hydro pole removed was $4 million, which was too much, Young said. Hydro has since donated geotechnical engineering services to survey the area.

Young said the project could be done in phases, starting with more seating on the ends of the stadium and then build the opposite side as the last phase, but the City is hopeful to come to an agreement with all parties involved soon so the project can be done at one time.
