Competition for new Polonia stadium

5 December 2018

POLAND Warsaw city council has announced an architectural competition for the renovation concept of the Polonia Warszawa football stadium at ul. Konwiktorska 6.

The main part of the work is to be the construction of a 15,500-seater football stadium. It should have a traditional layout as well as two large-format buildings with a public square on the approach to the stadium, between it and ul. Bonifraterska. One of these is to be a sports hall for a minimum 1,150 spectators suitable for volleyball and basketball matches. The other building will be a sports support centre. An underground car park for around 775 vehicles will also be built. The concept must take into account the neighbouring buildings as well as the surrounding area and landscape. It should have an innovative form and be economically viable.

The city has funds of almost PLN 158 mln for the construction of the first stage of the project. Applications for entering the competition should be made by December 21st, 2018 to the city’s architecture and spatial planning department. The deadline for the submission of competition entries is April 25th, 2019.

The assessment categories for the entries breaks down into the attractiveness and functionality of the architectural and urban solutions proposed (30 pct of the final marks), the compliance of the concept with guidelines (30 pct), the integrity of the entire composition (20 pct), with the remaining 20 pct for the financial conditions of the construction of the concept and the economic viability of the later operation of the complex.

The designer of the winning concept will receive a cash prize of PLN 100,000 and will be invited to negotiate under the direct agreement format. Second and third prizes of PLN 50,000 and PLN 25,000 respectively are also to be awarded as well as an additional PLN 25,000 for possible honourable mentions.
