Asheville Soccer Fields to be Replaced Amid Turf Concerns

10 March 2016

Plans to replace the artificial turf at the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex in Asheville are underway amid concerns from activists and a federal investigation into turf material that some fear causes cancer.

Media outlets report that the current turf at the field, known as "crumb rubber," has been used there for 10 years. Recently, activists have pointed to a possible link between crumb rubber and cancer. The link hasn't been proven but has gotten the attention of three federal agencies.

Replacing the turf is slated to cost $2.3 million and would put new surfaces on the complex's four fields. A current timeline calls for work to start in the spring and be finished by November.

Local activists want the city to replace the crumb rubber with an organic infill made of coconut fiber and cork.
