MuscleSound, a rapidly growing startup leveraging glycogen testing to detect and prevent soft-tissue muscle injuries across a variety of industries, today announced significant momentum in the NCAA. Approximately 10 total colleges, with new customers including Oregon State, the University of Colorado and the University of South Carolina, use MuscleSound to instantly measure and analyze nutrition-dependent glycogen.

MuscleSound has experienced over 850% growth in the usage of its patented SaaS system by college athletes alone during the first quarter of 2015 versus the same period last year.

“In the wake of the NCAA’s deregulation of the feeding of student athletes, teams are investing in new ways to optimize each athlete’s nutritional needs,” said MuscleSound CEO Stephen Kurtz. “By enabling team directors to understand the nutritional needs of each player in real-time, MuscleSound is maximizing the ROI of nutritional plans—and of the players themselves. We’re excited that we’re on our way to becoming the gold standard of nutritional optimization and soft-tissue injury prevention in college sports.”

Athletes’ fueling and recovery needs change throughout the season. By measuring glycogen, the body’s primary energy source during periods of high-energy exertion, MuscleSound enables teams to monitor and iterate nutritional needs over time. After taking an ultrasound scan of a muscle, MuscleSound sends the image to its cloud-based software, which generates results in about 15 seconds. Team leaders gain insight into the effects of current feeding regimens, injury prevention, recovery times and performance levels. Teams that currently leverage MuscleSound include the Colorado Rockies, Dallas Mavericks, NCAA teams, global Olympic teams and soccer clubs in the United Kingdom.

NCAA Teams Praise MuscleSound

“At the University of South Carolina, in fulfilling The Gamecock Promise, we want to give our athletes the competitive edge whenever possible,” said John Kasik, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at the University of South Carolina. “MuscleSound enables us to provide each of our athletes a customized plan with muscle-specific data allowing for personalized nutritional and training recommendations.”

“The MuscleSound technology allows Oregon State the opportunity to gain better insight into readiness and recovery,” said Oregon State University Sr. Assoc. Athletic Director Dr. Doug Aukerman. “Monitoring the effects of nutrition for exercise and increasing our return-to-play throughout the season will be a great benefit. With MuscleSound, our teams have taken the guesswork out of the fueling and recovery process.”

“We had the opportunity to work with MuscleSound over the past two years testing our players’ glycogen levels regularly each week,” said University of Colorado Head Athletic Trainer Miguel Rueda. “Knowing our players’ glycogen levels helped us to decrease our injury rates and it helped us to adjust our nutritional programs, training loads and practice structures to the needs of the players as those needs evolved throughout the season.”
