Wofford starts construction on new basketball arena named for Carolina Panthers owner

21 October 2015

Wofford has broken ground on its new basketball facility, which will be named after NFL team owner and college alumnus Jerry Richardson.

Richardson, a 1959 Wofford graduate, provided the financial gift to build the facility, to be called the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Ground was broken on Tuesday.

The facility will have a 3,400-seat basketball arena and a 500-seat volleyball venue along with offices, locker rooms, meeting rooms, training rooms and fan areas. It's expected to be finished by September 2017.

Wofford currently plays basketball in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. It is to be used for intramural competitions and other campus recreational activities once the new facility is built.

The new building will be adjacent to Gibbs Stadium, where the Terriers play football.
