Wetumpka council approves $100,000 for sports complex

25 March 2015

The Wetumpka City Council approved Tuesday the spending of up to $100,000 on equipment for the upgraded Wetumpka Sports Complex.

Ron Dickerson, head of consultant leisure affairs for the city, told the council the opening of the new baseball fields at the complex would not be ready by the estimated April 6 completion date. He requested the funds to be able to provide items such as bases, netting and lawn mowers.

“This will allow us to go ahead and move forward and get those items in place,” said Mayor Jerry Willis following the meeting.

Willis also explained that some of the items will be able to be purchased while others will have to be put out for bids.

The expansion of the Wetumpka Sports Complex has been in progress since the council voted to enter into a professional services agreement with a construction management firm in May 2013. At that time, there were only five softball fields with plans to add up to 15 in additional phases.

Willis said this construction will complete the second phase of the expansion. He expects the fields to be ready by mid to late April.
