Triton Ready To Unveil New Sports Complex

21 April 2016

Triton Community College sports legends, including former Major League Baseball all-star Lance Johnson, will join coaches, teams, staff and students as they celebrate the reopening of Triton’s newly renovated east campus athletic complex, and Symonds Puckett Field, at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28.

The complex is located on the east side of the campus at 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove. Groundbreaking for the renovations occurred a year ago on April 27, 2015.

The Triton Trojans baseball team will kick off the home baseball season against Oakton Community College at 3 p.m. next Thursday.

The complex includes new synthetic baseball and softball turfs with updated field houses and bleachers. Additionally, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, and other athletic contests can now be held on the new multi-purpose field.

The renovated athletic complex is part of Triton College’s multi-year, $53 million bond revenue campus renewal program.

As for former school baseball legends, Johnson was a member of Triton’s 1982 and 1983 baseball teams that made back-to-back NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) World Series appearances. He played 14 seasons in the Majors including with the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs.

Celebrated Triton baseball coach Bob Symonds, for whom the baseball field is named, will also be part of the reopening ceremony. During his 33-year tenure at Triton, Symonds coached the Trojans to a 1,373-457 record.

Community residents are also invited to participate in the event.

The new complex, school officials note, will also be used by the community. Triton is partnering with schools and organizations to host youth sports tournaments, high school competitions and more.
