The Miracle League Sports Complex Opening in Cy-Fair

17 March 2015

The Miracle League field, an adaptive sports complex for children with mental and physical disabilities, will be opening at the Langham Creek YMCA Saturday, March 28. The complex, which is able to serve over 1,000 individuals with special needs, is Houston’s first sports complex of its kind.

Festivities of opening day will include baseball games, free food, and carnival activities. Sports activities that will be available at the complex include: baseball, flag football, basketball, swimming, tennis and soccer.

“Nearly 22 percent of U.S. households have one or more children under the age of 17 with special needs,” said Palmer Hestley, YMCA brand marketing and communications manager. “This complex provides a respite for parents and caregivers who are able to see their children enjoy playing sports for the first time.” (National Survey of Children with Special Healthcare Needs, 2005-2006)

Children will be able to play baseball comfortably and safely because of The Miracle League Sports program. An important benefit of having the specially designed field is the custom-designed, rubberized turf field. The grass field makes it easier and safer for children in wheelchairs and with other mobility disability devices.

Bringing the Miracle League to Cy-Fair took close to 5 years. Since the YMCA is a non-profit organization, donations funded the building of the complex. Individuals and the community were able to raise the $2.4 million needed to make the project become a reality.

Before the grand opening of the complex, “The Field with Dreams Gala” will be held to benefit the Miracle League Endowment Fund. “This fund ensures the league will impact those in our community living with special needs for years to come,” said Hestley. “The event takes place at Pine Forest Country Club and includes dinner, silent and live auctions, and the opportunity to celebrate the past year of the Miracle League and other adaptive sports programs.” The general public can purchase tickets to the gala by visiting the YMCA Houston website.

One of the main purposes of the program is to create a safe bonding environment for children and their families.

“YMCA volunteers saw a demand for services for children with special needs, and developed the complex to better serve families in a unique way,” said Hestley, YMCA brand marketing and communications manager. “Our program focuses not on the limits faced by children, but what they are able to accomplish and help families bond through shared experiences.”
