Stanley-Boyd new $5.6 million sports complex plans moves forward

Construction on a new $5.6 million sports complex at Stanley-Boyd High School will begin this spring, and the first phase, which will include a new track and football field, will be completed in fall 2016.

The Stanley-Boyd school board approved construction of the project’s first phase Tuesday. The board hired Haas Sons of Thorp to do the project.

“We’re going to have a beautiful facility once it’s done,” Stanley-Boyd school board member Jeff Boie said. “I think it’s an awesome addition to our community.”

To pay for the project, the board has spread the cost over the the next four years, along with a 15-year, $1 million loan. The project did not go to a referendum.

Board Vice Chairwoman Jackie Holub shared Boie’s enthusiasm.

“We’re just looking forward,” Holub said. “We’ve put in a lot of hours into designing it.”

Boie said the football field will have seating capacity of 1,500 and the field will be an artificial surface, allowing the band to use it frequently as well.

The school district does not currently have a track, meaning athletes for that sport must run in the school parking lot. The track will have nine lanes, making it wide enough for the district to hold competitive meets at the school.

“(Runners) will be able to practice on the track next year, but the final surface won’t be done until the fall,” Holub said.

The sports complex is being constructed on property next to the school. The football team has traditionally played its home games at Chapman Park in the northwest corner of the city. Boie said he’s pleased the complex means all those events will be held on school property.
