Sports complex plan for Cape Coral moves forward

A plan to build a massive sports complex in Cape Coral is moving forward.

On Monday night, Cape Coral City Council voted to draft a new lease with the South Florida Canoe Kayak Club.

They want to build and fund a $22.5 million complex on Lake Kennedy, which is city-owned property.

Club leadership says this new facility will lure international athletes to the area.

“We're bringing a 280-bed housing unit for athletes only, so we can train Olympic athletes from all over the world and we'll put resources back into our local economy,” said Ian Mack of the South Florida Canoe Kayak Club.

Currently, the club runs its programs from a single family home next to Sunsplash Water Park. People who already belong to the club are excited to see it expand and add to the city.

“The idea of bringing that kind of infrastructure into the community offering those kinds of jobs providing the ability for these kids and athletes from all around the world to come here and train to compete is unbelievable,” said John Bosco, whose son was one of the club's first members.

There are some people opposed to the plan who live on Lake Kennedy. They worry this could limit their access to the water.

Once the lease is finalized, which should take around 6 months, it will come back to City Council for another vote
