Roseville City Council to build $35 million regional sports complex

17 April 2015

The Roseville City Council on Wednesday granted final approval for a plan to build a 55-acres sports tournament complex on the city's western edge.

The vote caps years of effort. The complex will serve youth and senior amateur soccer, lacrosse, football, rugby and various other long-field sports. Plans call for eight to 12 fields covered in artificial turf.

The city of Roseville is contributing $5 million and all the land for the tournament grounds, which includes parking for 850 cars. Placer Valley Tourism, the marketing bureau for Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln, will take on bonds to borrow $30 million to construct the fields.

The bureau will be exploring naming rights for the facility in the coming years, said Kim Summers, head of marketing for Placer Valley.

Placer Valley next plans to issue a pair of request for qualifications to find a project manager and architect for the project, Summers said. The goal is to begin construction in 2016 with an opening in 2018.

Officials predict the sports complex will drive up to $12 million in economic activity by creating hotel and restaurant business on the weekends for regional, statewide and national events.

“This project will be a game-changer for the region,” Placer Valley Tourism CEO David Attaway said in a news release. “Tournaments and events held at the Regional Sports Complex will not only give locals a great place to gather for sporting events, but will ultimately result in a boost in tourism dollars to local hotels, restaurants and retail.”
