Plans for Cambridge United's new stadium and Trumpington sports village to be unveiled next week

13 May 2015

Landmark plans for Cambridge United's new stadium and a sports village in Trumpington will be officially unveiled on Monday.

Two major consultation events will showcase the ambitious proposals to the community on Monday and Tuesday next week.

The football club made its intentions clear in January, confirming it wanted to redevelop its existing stadium in Newmarket Road as well as playing a key part in the new sporting village in the south of the city.

Detailed planning applications for both are due to be submitted later this year.

The first consultation event will be held at Trumpington Meadows Primary School on Monday, from noon until 9pm.

The exhibition then moves to the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday, between the same times.

All views expressed at the exhibition will be used going forward, with a second series of exhibits planned later in the year when the plans are finalised.

More than 7,000 invitations have been distributed to residents in Trumpington and Abbey, as well as other interested parties.

The two projects are working together as the Cambridge Community Sporting Trust (CCST).

They will deliver a package of sports, education and health facilities, as well as hundreds of new homes.

Ed Skeates, Grosvenor's director of development for Cambridge, said: "We are interested in hearing as many thoughts and views on our proposals as possible and hope the people of Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire attend these exhibitions at the two sites.

"As we confirmed in January, the community stadium will be located at a revitalised R Costings Abbey Stadium with an emphasis on community uses and operated by a trust with a robust and self financing, sustainable management plan.

"This linked project will provide Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire with a variety of inspirational sports facilities, accessible to the public as participants and spectators and assist in securing the future of Cambridge United Football Club, the city's leading professional sports club.

"The Cambridge community stadium and the sporting village will, we hope, drive increased sports participation and further enhance Cambridge's reputation as a world-class and thriving cosmopolitan city."

Grosvenor will also be launching a consultation website to allow people to submit their views electronically and get updates as the project progresses this year. This goes live on Monday at ccst.commonplace.is
