8 December 2015

The Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association is planning to set up a state-of-the-art sports stadium at Bhaderwah, JKCA chairman, Mehboob Iqbal said today.

While addressing a press conference here, Iqbal said he has inspected the site for the proposed stadium in the Bhaderwah campus of Jammu University and around 300 kanals of land have been identified for the construction of cricket stadium and allied facilities.

The former bureaucrat said that the Bhaderwah campus of Jammu University will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding with JKCA and hand over its sports ground to JKCA within three months “so that construction and development work on the stadium could be taken up”.

“The JKCA will develop a mini sports stadium and construct the sports complex at the site where modern facilities will be available”, he said. Iqbal said the government has flagged development and growth of sports as one of the important sectors and various measures have already been taken to provide required sports infrastructure across the state. He said construction of indoor sports complex at Bhaderwah is also in the pipeline.
The expected completion of the stadium is 2017 and the construction work will start in May next year. The stadium capacity would be about 50,000 spectators, he said.
Sheikh Mehboob Iqbal further said a comprehensive design of the stadium has been finalized keeping in mind all stakeholders – spectators, players, media and administration.
In the first phase construction of north and south pavilion will be done and the second phase will start with construction of east and west pavilion, he said, adding that the stadium would further help in attracting tourists.
Iqbal promised to develop the outfield with Australian grass after preparing two pitches in the middle. This will be the first of its kind stadium in erstwhile Doda district, he said.
