Gateway Sports Village Announces Selection of and Partnership with Shaw Sports Turf

21 December 2016

Currently under construction, Gateway Sports Village will be the largest synthetic turf complex in the world with 14 soccer fields that will also be used for football, lacrosse and youth baseball.

A key component of the sports complex is the installation of the best performing, world-class playing surface from Shaw Sports Turf that will draw teams regionally, nationally and internationally.

Deron Cherry, founder of the Gateway partners, and a former All-Pro safety for the Kansas City Chiefs, knows a little about playing in first-class facilities and on world-class playing surfaces.

“It was important for us that fields we build be the best playing fields and on the cutting edge of safety for our kids,” said Cherry. “It’s also critical that the fields stand up to the amount of usage with league, tournaments and practice times. Games are scheduled from 7 am to 11 pm on game days. That’s a ton of non-stop play and these Shaw Sports Turf fields will maintain the performance over the lifetime of the fields.”

After an exhausting search, Gateway made the decision to partner with Shaw Sports Turf for the project.

Shaw Sports Turf is a Berkshire-Hathaway Company, and part of Shaw Industries, the world’s largest carpet maker and flooring supplier. The company has also installed over 2,000 synthetic turf fields in its history and has a great reputation as the leader in the industry.

“For us, Shaw Sports Turf made the most sense,” explained Gateway partner Kurt Pycior. “Their products came highly recommended, they have put in a tremendous amount of research and development with their products, and they have built a reputation as the only choice for large sports destination complexes.”

Gateway Sports Village has chosen the PowerBlade Pro system for its 14 outdoor fields.

The system the fields will utilize features Shaw’s revolutionary Bolt fiber. Bolt is a stronger, more resilient monofilament fiber, featuring a lightning bolt shape, which creates a stronger vertical axis that causes fibers to stand upright for less breakdown and increased durability. Bolt is specifically built for performance and will also stand up to the demand of the all the games at Gateway in that it exceeds the most stringent industry requirement for simulated wear by more than two times.

Further, the fields will also utilize the organic GeoFill infill system. GeoFill is the leading natural infill in the synthetic turf market. It is made from coconut husks and fibers, which are 100% organic and a rapidly renewable resource.

GeoFill provides the natural footing and support of a natural field without the mess of dirt and instability of other infill systems. It demonstrates great stability and excels in critical ball-to-surface interactions such as ball roll and ball bounce. It is not only a great, natural infill system, it helps create a high-performing, state-of-the-art playing surface. An added benefit of GeoFill is that it has been shown to be as much as 40 degrees cooler than standard synthetic turf systems.

“We are proud that Gateway Sports Village selected Shaw Sports Turf for this world-class facility,” said Nathan Henderson, Territory Manger with Shaw Sports Turf. “This complex is going to mean so much for the development of soccer, as well as provide a strong economic impact for the area. It’s exciting to know they will be playing on Shaw Sports Turf at such as great sports destination.”

On the business side, Gateway will serve as a showcase and sales office for Shaw Sports Turf products featuring the PowerBlade Pro system and the organic GeoFill. In addition to the office, educational kiosks will be located throughout the complex displaying the state-of-the-art field composition and design.

Gateway will have a 150,000 square foot field house which will support volleyball, basketball, and futsal. It will also feature 450 hotel rooms, the Gateway Golf Experience, residential developments with 250 multi-family housing units and 130 single family homes.
