Fox Sports Digital acquires assests from StraightCast Media, including mobile app 'GridIron Grunts'

19 August 2015

A Chapel Hill-based sports media company with NFL roots has struck a deal with Fox Sports Digital.

Assets from StraightCast Media, including a mobile app called "GridIron Grunts," have been acquired by Fox.

Additionally, the media giant announced that StraightCast co-founder and former NFL player Jeb Terry has been named vice president of program management for Fox Sports Digital.

Terry says nothing remains of the firm in Chapel Hill, and that the headquarters and all of the development activities have moved under the Fox umbrella in California. He calls the acquisition a natural progression of the working relationship he's had with Fox.

"We looked in the mirror and we were like, 'this makes sense,'" he says.

The two companies had partnered during the 2014 NFL season to create a Sunday segment called "On the Bus," featuring mobile video taken by players heading to football games. Terry says his team is rebranding the product with the Fox logo.

StraightCast was founded in 2010 by Terry and another former NFL player, Ryan Nece. The goal was to develop a new way for players to engage with fans. Terry graduated from UNC with both an undergraduate business degree and an MBA.

Financial terms of the deal were not released.
