Abilene Investing up to $1.6 Million into Youth Sports Complex

28 March 2016

Abilene City Council members approved an agreement to lease 12 acres of land at Grover Nelson Park to the Abilene Youth Sports Authority for the construction of a 50,000-square-foot youth sports complex, and some residents say it's a good investment.

The facility will host basketball and volleyball tournaments along with other activities for the city’s youth.

In the agreement, AYSA was given 30 months to raise $8.5 million -- $7.5 million for the construction and $1 million for the maintenance. The city of Abilene will provide up to $1.6 million to repair the sidewalks, sewer system and storm water system.

AYSA director Jon Smith said he has 25 percent of the funds already committed.

Abilene resident Mark Jackson told KTXS he thinks the money will be a good investment.

“It could keep kids out of trouble and bring a lot of money into the city,” Jackson said.

Barry Miller said he think Smith’s work with AYSA is a testament to how successful the complex will be.

“Jon has done a lot of great work – I think this is a good investment it will bring people to the city and tournaments,” Miller said.

Smith told KTXS he’s excited to bring another attraction to the Nelson Park area. He said being located next to the Abilene Zoo, Taylor County Expo Center, and splash pad will help bring more business to the area.
