Official groundbreaking for Georgia's indoor athletic facility to take place Tuesday

16 February 2016

While construction has been underway since late December, Georgia will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony for the $30.2 million indoor athletic facility on Tuesday.

The ceremony will take place at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall at 3 p.m. Among those expected to be in attendance are university president Jere W. Morehead, athletic director Greg McGarity, football head coach Kirby Smart and track and field All-American Kendell Williams.

The original plan was for Georgia to raise approximately $15 million of the cost through fundraising, while dipping into the athletic association's reserve for the rest. The university has exceeded the fundraising goal, however, by announcing it has raised $17 million thus far.

The building is scheduled to be completed in January of 2017.

The indoor athletic facility will house a 100-yard football practice field, a 65-meter track runway, jumping pits for field events and a netting system for other sports to use in the case of inclement weather.

Due to the construction of the facility, Georgia's football team will practice at the club sports complex on S. Milledge Ave.

Georgia is the last SEC program to build an indoor athletic facility, although the one the university is constructing is expected to rival some of the best in the nation.
